Using the Toolbar

The toolbar allows you to interact with the map by clicking on the map with a tool. For example, if you click in the toolbar on the Zoom In tool, then click on the map, the map will zoom in around where you click.

You can also interact with the map using the keyboard. Also see Using the mouse for tips on using the mouse to interact with the map.

To use a tool

Note: Some tools do an action immediately. An example would be the Full-extent tool.

Tools

Tools available on the MapIT website:

Name Icon Description
Zoom in Zoom in tool Click and drag a rectangle: Click and hold the left mouse button down on the map at one corner of the rectangle to zoom in to. Drag the mouse to the other corner of the rectangle, and release the mouse button. The map will zoom in to the area of the rectangle.
Zoom out Zoom out tool Click and drag a rectangle: the map will zoom out so that the current map area will fit into the rectangle drawn. The smaller the rectangle you draw, the more the map will zoom out.
Full extent Full map extent Full extent: Immediately zooms the map out to the area of all features and layers. The active tool does not change.
Pan (recenter) Pan tool Click and drag the map: Click and hold the left mouse button on the map, and drag the map. The map will be recentered, with the location dragged at the location you dropped it.
Zoom to Coordinate Zoom to Coordinate Zoom to coordinate: If GPS or other system coordinates are known, they can be entered in the appropriate boxes to locate the position on the map.
Previous Extent Previous Extent Click previous extent: Click Previous Extent to return the map to the size previously selected.
Identify Identify tool Click to identify: Click with the left mouse button on the map. After zooming to the desired position on the map, click Identify Features, then click the position on the map. A dialog box appears with expandable lists identifying information for the position selected.
Select features Select Features Tool Click select features: This button opens a floating dialog box with additional toolbuttons that can be used to select and view features for a position on the map. See Select for more information.
Selected results Select Results Tool Click selected attributes: This button opens the selected results dialog box.
Clear selection clear selection Click clear selection: All of the selected featrues will be cleared from the selection.
Buffer features Buffer Features Tool Click buffer selected features: Opens a dialog box that allows custom settings to select an Item Layer that is within the selected number of feet of currently selected items. A list is then displayed showing a list of items within the buffered area. See Buffer for more information.
Measure Measure tool Measure distance or area: Click to display options for measuring distances between or around a selected point or object on the map. See Measuring for usage.
Add graphics and or text Graphics/text tool Click the graphics/text: Click this button to access the tools used in adding graphics and text to a map. See Adding graphics or text for usage.
Print Print Print: Click this button to print the map. See Printing for useage.
Help Help Help: Click this button to open the Help Feature.
